People shoplift for different reasons, many of which have to do with trauma.
Childhood trauma can often impact people later in life in ways that, at first, seem completely unrelated to their past. For example, compulsive behaviors, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and performance blocks can all be the result of trauma.
The majority of my clients who have shoplifted, have done so out of an emotional, not economic need. When people shoplift, they often need therapeutic support and compassion, not shame and punishment. Being caught shoplifting can be a blessing for people suffering from trauma. It gets them help. It allows them to start a journey of self discovery that transforms pain into wisdom.
Doing trauma work can not only result in changing behaviors, it can improve people’s relationships, and their overall quality of life.
If you know someone who has shoplifted, or you struggle with shoplifting yourself, there is help!
